Caxton Legal Centre is an independent, non-profit community organisation providing free legal advice, social work services, information and referrals for people who are disadvantaged.
Caxton Legal Centre Inc's vision is to:
- Build a just and inclusive society that values difference and diversity and the rights of all people and their communities to the social and economic
resources they need to exercise their human rights. - Influence the development of law to recognise the needs of people who are socially or economically disadvantaged.
- Assist people who would otherwise be denied access to justice due to social or economic disadvantage to exercise their legal rights.
Caxton's services experience a high level of demand. In 2010-11 we provided legal advice 8,337 times to 4,356 clients. This was done with the assistance of over 200 volunteer lawyers and law students.
Caxton has expertise in a range of areas including credit and debt, neighbourhood law, incorporated associations, employment law, discrimination, insurance, family law, domestic violence and guardianship law.
Caxton's services are designed to provide access to justice and are targeted towards the most disadvantaged members of society. Priority is given to clients experiencing financial, social and other barriers in accessing legal services. We recognise that there are many barriers to accessing justice however encourage higher income earners to consult private lawyers to ensure our services are directed to our most disadvantaged clients.
