Caxton Legal Centre is an independent, non-profit community organisation providing free legal advice, social work services, assistance and referrals for the general public.
Our services are designed for people who cannot afford a solicitor, for people who just want initial advice, or for people who want a referral to a private solicitor. We can provide services in most areas of law except immigration, conveyancing and some large commercial matters.
The Centre receives government funding from the Commonwealth Attorney-General's Department, Department of Communities and Legal Aid Queensland.
Additional funding is raised through donations, membership fees, sale of publications and other fundraising activities.
The Centre employs a small group of full-time day staff including solicitors, social workers and administration workers. A group of more than 200 volunteer lawyers, social workers and students donate their time to provide advice and assistance outside normal working hours.
A Management Committee oversees the general direction of the Centre while day-to-day operations are managed by the Centre's Director and paid staff.
