Our free legal advice sessions run
three nights per week.
MONDAY, TUESDAY & THURSDAY
6.00pm to 7:30pm
No need to make an appointment.
Interviews during our evening advice sessions are usually limited to 20 minutes to enable us to assist as many people as possible. Day time appointments are available for people who are genuinely unable to attend a session at night.
We do not provide legal advice in the following areas of law:
Immigration, tax, conveyancing, commercial matters, small businesses, investment properties, personal injuries, native title, building disputes (such as between you and someone you have contracted to work on your home).
We cannot assist with writing wills although we can assist with limited advice about the interpretation of wills.
A qualified practitioner will give general advice, assist clients to work out the best course of action to take and provide a written copy of the advice.
Referrals are given to Legal Aid Queensland, private solicitors and other appropriate offices and agencies.
Bring any paperwork you have related to your legal questions. Charge sheets, letters between you and the other person or company, contracts, court documents and anything else that is relevant.
You also need to have the full name - first name and family name - of the person who is on the other side of your legal matter. We cannot give you legal advice without it. This is on order for us to check for a potential conflict of interest. If your dispute is with a company or institution we need that name and the name of an individual if you have been dealing with a specific person over an extended period of time.
We can assist with most areas of law, depending on the volunteer availability during the evening advice sessions. Our drop-in legal advice sessions are primarily staffed by volunteer lawyers. You may wish to call us the afternoon you plan to come in to check that a lawyer with knowledge relevant to your issue will be attending.
We can usually arrange free translators for daytime appointments - we will need a minimum of one week's notice to arrange this. Telephone interpreters are usually available at the evening sessions.
In conjunction with the Griffith University Law School, the Centre operates an advice clinic staffed by students and supervisors with a focus on family law and general legal matters in alternating university semesters.
For a referral to a private lawyer who may be able to assist you with matters that fall into the categories above please see our referral list here or contact the Queensland Law Society.
